Types of Certificates of Origin

The structure and content of Certificates of Origin (COOs) in global trade can vary, but they typically contain key information about the shipped goods. This includes the product’s tariff code, details of the exporter and importer, and the country of origin.

Non-Preferential Certificate of Origin: This type of certificate confirms that the exported goods do not qualify for reduced tariffs or tariff-free treatment under any trade agreements between countries. If there is no applicable treaty or trade agreement between the exporting and importing countries, an ordinary COO is required. Additionally, if a specific product is excluded from tariff relief, it must be declared using an ordinary COO.

Preferential Certificate of Origin: These certificates indicate that there is a free trade agreement or reduced tariffs between the countries involved in the trade. For instance, they are used for exports between SAFTA countries or under the India-UAE trade agreement.
